  Dear Readers,

Luna’s story is a wonderful tale of a Little girl with a toothache. Riding in on his white stallion to help her (figuratively – although that might be fun for a later book), Sebastian Graham, DDS helps her battle a very serious infection. As always, each Dr. Richards’ Littles book is a complete story that can be read alone, but you may enjoy them more by reading the series in order.

  Chapter One

There was no denying it. Her tooth just kept getting worse. Luna barely touched her jaw feeling the swelling and heat. Immediately, she pulled her hand away. The tall, gangly redhead stood in front of the door to Dr. Sebastian Graham's dental office. She squared her shoulders and repeated the same words she'd been telling herself as she watched the patients go in and out all day – she had to try.

Luna wrapped her hand around the door handle and pulled the glass door slowly open. She forced herself to walk into the waiting room. It was empty.

"May I help you?" an unfriendly female voice greeted her.

Luna looked at the desk to see a thin, blond wearing a lot of makeup looking unpleasantly at her. "I'm sorry to bother you, but I was hoping that I could talk to Dr. Graham."

"Unfortunately, you're here too late. We're closing, and the doctor doesn't have time to see you today. I've already closed my computer, so you'll need to call tomorrow to schedule an appointment. I'll warn you - Dr. Graham is very busy. He currently is not taking any new patients. Are you an established patient?" the receptionist asked stridently.

Looking at the cardboard nameplate on the counter, Luna smiled her friendliest. "I apologize for coming to the office is closing, Ashley. It's an emergency of sorts. If I could just see Dr. Graham . . ." she began only to be interrupted by the annoyed blonde.

"If you are an established patient, Dr. Graham might be able to see you, but I don't think you've been in the office before." She stated as she stood to usher Luna from the office. She handed Luna a card and said, "Call tomorrow, and I'll try to get you in to see him in the next month."

"Please, could you just ask him?" Luna hated asking for help. She'd been on her own for the last year. She had learned that she could only rely on herself, but she couldn't fix this.

"Ashley, who's this?" a friendly voice came from behind the receptionist's desk. "I didn't know we had any more appointments today." He was a tall, athletic man with military-short, dark brown hair and caring eyes.

Luna had chosen to come to his office after seeing him at the grocery store. Dr. Graham had stopped his cart to help a young mother whose toddler had destroyed a towering display of cereal boxes. She had been on the verge of tears as she tried to corral her son and restore the display. He had distracted the little boy with his deep voice as he reassured the mother and rebuilt the display. After hearing the mother thank him using his name, she'd remembered it. Luna didn't see a lot of selfless acts of kindness. When her tooth started hurting, she'd walked several miles to see if he would help her.

"We don't have any more appointments today, doctor. This young lady's going to call tomorrow for an appointment," the receptionist said smoothly, and she steered Luna toward the door with a strong hand on her arm.

Twisting away from her grip, Luna walked quickly to the counter. "Dr. Graham, I hate to bother you, but I've got a toothache," Luna explained gesturing to her jaw.

"Wow! You sure do. I can see the swelling from here. You should have come to see me a long time ago. How long has this been hurting?" he asked kindly walking closer. This slender, young woman intrigued him. She was dressed simply but cleanly in jeans and a tee shirt. She met his light brown eyes honestly. There was something about her that raised his protective instincts. He felt like he should care about her more than just a patient in his practice. He ran his fingers gently over the swelling in her jaw to assess the problem. He could see the pulse beating at her throat quicken.

"A week or so," Luna answered vaguely. It had been bothering her for longer than that, but she hadn't known what to do. "My problem is . . . I don't have any money or insurance to pay you. I was hoping that you'd let me repay you by cleaning your office or working on the gardens outside. I'm pretty good at both. I'll work for as long as you wish until I've repaid you," Luna said in a rush she tried to stand straight and look in his eyes, but she could see the receptionist's face contort in ridicule from the corner of her eye. She felt her shoulders begin to round in as she waited for the refusal. Her eyes st
ayed linked to his. For a few seconds, she felt as if they were communicating silently. His masculinity and strength reassured her.

"Well, isn't this ridiculous! You come in off the streets at the end of a long day and ask everyone to stay late to treat you. And you don't have any money! You've got some nerve!" she berated Luna.

"Ashley, I know you are just here temporarily while my regular receptionist is on maternity leave, but we do not talk to patients with that tone of voice here. Thank you for your work today. I will call the temp agency tomorrow and ask them to send someone else to replace you. Please gather your things and leave," Dr. Graham said calmly glancing at her momentarily before turning his gaze back to the intriguing figure before him.

"What? I lose my job because of this street person?" Ashley put her hands on her hips in exasperation. When he simply indicated the door, she grabbed the sweater from the back of her chair and pulled her purse from a drawer. "Fine. Good luck getting a replacement," she said sullenly as she stomped toward the door.

  Chapter Two

"I'm so sorry." Luna began to back up toward the door after it slammed shut as Ashley flounced through angrily. "I shouldn't have bothered you. Now, you've lost your receptionist for tomorrow. I'll just leave." She turned to scurry through the door. His voice froze her in place with her hand on the handle.

"I am counting on you to answer my phone tomorrow until the new receptionist gets here, Luna. Come back and let me look at your tooth," he said firmly. His tone did not brook any denial but was still friendly. He smiled at her warmly. Lifting one hand to beckon to her, he urged, "That tooth must hurt. We're both here. Let's fix it."

Luna nodded and smiled. "Thank you. I'll be glad to answer your phones tomorrow if that will help you," she promised. She walked back into the office slowly and followed him to an open dental exam room. Shrugging off her battered backpack, Luna propped it against the wall out of the way but in her line of sight. She sat down in the long dental chair and tried to relax.

Attaching a bib around her delicate neck, Dr. Graham opened a cabinet for a set of tools. He glanced over her thin body. Her legs extended for miles on the dental chair. "She's too slender," he noted to himself. Shaking his head mentally as his protective instincts began to kick in, he pulled on sterile gloves and opened the dental tools. "Now, let's look at your tooth. Open wide." He maneuvered the dental mirror and a probe around the inflamed area. Just touching her gum lightly made her jump in pain.

"Sorry! I'll hold still," Luna promised with tears in her eyes. She opened her mouth again and closed her eyes as pain flared through one side of her face. She was scared. She couldn't live with this pain. "Dr. Graham is going to help me," she repeated in her mind trying to reassure herself.

Dr. Graham noticed the white-fingered grip she had on the armrests and her rigid position. He knew she was going to try to power through the pain so that he would treat her with the least fuss possible. "Luna, look at me." He waited until her striking, light green eyes opened and met his. "I will not treat you if I can't count on you, to be honest. I don't want to hurt you. I can tell this is very painful. Will you promise to tell me the truth so that we can fix this?" he asked in that deep reassuring voice that had impressed her so much in the grocery store.

She nodded slowly. "I promise," she whispered held in place by his eyes.

"Your tooth and gum are very infected. Before we can treat your tooth or whatever caused this infection, you'll need to take a round of antibiotics. I'll give you a prescription for painkillers as well. I know this is very painful. I need to drain the abscess today, so the antibiotics have a fighting chance to defeat the germs. I'll do this by making a small incision in your gum. Your mouth will feel better instantly after the brief pain of the incision as the pressure drains away. I'm going to numb your mouth before I start but the shot will be uncomfortable because the tissue is so inflamed. Can you be brave?" he asked looking at her carefully.

"I don't need a shot. That will just cost more money. I don't want to impose any more than I already have. Just go ahead and drain it. I'll be okay," she rushed to say.

"I do not cause pain to my patients, Luna. Let me worry about costs, okay? Besides, you haven't heard how many times my phone rings. You're going to need to be able to talk without pain." Dr. Graham prepared the shot and sat back on his stool. "Open your mouth, Luna. I'll try to be gentle, but this may hurt. Raise your left hand if you need me to stop." He watched her eyes close as he pressed the syringe into the gum tissue around the infection. She held perfectly still, holding her breath.

"All done, Luna. You can relax for a minute while that begins to numb the area. You did very well," he praised placing his hand over hers to pry the clenched fingers from the armrest. Holding her hand gently in his large warm grip, he continued. "It is important for you to take all of the antibiotics I prescribe for you. I have some here in the office that I can give you. You'll need to eat when you take them because they can be hard on your stomach." Releasing her hand, he rolled his stool over to a locked cabinet and withdrew a large white container. Counting out a ten-day regimen of the prescription, he sealed them into a small container and set it on the counter.

"Okay, does your jaw feel numb?" he asked smiling changing his gloves. When she nodded, he picked up the dental mirror and probe. "Open wide. If this hurts, raise your left hand to stop me."

Opening her mouth and closing her eyes, Luna tried to relax. She could feel some of the instruments' touches in her mouth, but the pain was bearable. The dentist gently explored her tooth and gum before locating the best place to drain away the infection. Luna felt a brief flash of pain. She tried to hold herself steady, but she jerked slightly in reaction.

"Shhhhhh! Luna, it's okay. I'm all done now. Why didn't you tell me that your mouth wasn't fully numb? There will be consequences if you hide the truth from me in the future. Now, it's all done. Open your mouth to let me wipe the infection away. I promise I won't need to open the incision any further. Good girl," he praised as she opened her mouth again obediently.

She felt him press against the swollen gum tissue as a mass of horrible tasting goo oozed into her mouth. "Uggghhh!" she said muffled by the fingers in her mouth.

"There's a lot of infection here. I bet it does taste bad," he sympathized as he pressed gauze squares into her mouth to absorb the infection. Wiping it away and pressing to coax as much infection from her gum as possible, Sebastian talked to his patient steadily to distract her from the procedure.

He assessed her carefully. There was no doubt that she had fallen on tough times. Her shoes were worn with tattered places along the sides. Although her clothes were clean, they were worn at the seams and lightened by age. Her backpack was battered. She looked at it frequently to make sure it was still there. He bet it had all her possessions in it. Every fiber of his being was yelling at him to take care of her.

Finally, he was pleased to see only red blood was oozing from the incision site. He rolled his chair back and said, "Luna, I want you to rinse your mouth thoroughly with this medicated mouthwash. It may sting a little," he warned as he poured some of the clear liquid into a small cup. "Just swoosh it through your teeth and around your mouth for a few seconds. Spit it out in the sink when you've finished." He watched as she stood shakily from the chair. Reading out a steadying hand, he supported her while she recovered her balance. The grateful smile she sent received a gentle nod.

Luna walked the short distance to the sink. She took a large mouthful of the medicated rinse and coughed immediately as it stung her mouth. Spraying the mouthwash all over the upper cabinets, Luna leaned over desperately to try to spit it out before she made a bigger mess. "Sorry," she said appalled. She grabbed paper towels from the dispenser and began wiping down the cabinets. She felt his warmth behind him before she realized he had joined her at the sink. His hands pressed against hers on the dripping cabinet doors, pinning her in place. She felt secure not threatened by his large body so close to hers.

"Luna, calm down. This happens all the time. Take a breath. Good girl," he praised. He felt her body stiffen against him at his last words. Quickly, he distracted her, "You clean the left and I'll wipe down the right. Then, we'll try again. I should have given you a better warning." Together, they erased the mess. Dr. Graham poured a little more of the medicated rinse into the cup. "This time, lean over the sink. Try again," he directed firmly as he stepped back. He watched her carefully as he sat back on his stool. He was pleased to see that she was able to rinse her mouth for several seconds this time. Sebastian enjoyed the sight of her bottom pointing toward him from her bent position. He could feel his body responding. He shifted in his chair moving his white coat to cover his partial erection.

Dr. Graham waited for her to sit back down. "Your tooth isn't fixed. We haven't even started on the cause of the infection. We'll need to knock it back with the antibiotics for several days before I can treat the tooth. I'm going to give you the antibiotics, but I don't keep prescription painkillers here in the office. I can write you a prescription for the pharmacy down the block, or I can give you some sample packs of acetaminophen which is an over the counter medicine for pain."

"Oh, I don't need any pain medicine. I'll be okay," Luna rushed to reassure him. "Are you sure I need the antibiotics?

"Yes. You need to take all ten days of the pills. Take one three times a day with meals." She didn't say anything, but he could see from the widening of her eyes that regular meals were rare much less having three meals in a day. "Do you have some room in your backpack?" he asked carefully.

When she hesitated before nodding, he added, "Come take the first pill now. You can count this as dinner." He shook out a large white pill before handing her a small cup of water. While she took that, he walked back to his office and grabbed the cereal bars he had in his desk and a bottle of water. Folding the wrapper back on one bar, he handed it to her. "Eat. You need something in your stomach. Now, it's important to keep the germs in your mouth in check. Be sure to brush your teeth after every meal and rinse with mouthwash." He loaded a small bag with three toothbrushes, several small boxes of toothpaste, and a medium sized bottle of mouthwash. When he turned back around, she was crumpling the wrapper in her hand having inhaled the bar. He handed her the bag and said, "In three days, I should be able to work on that tooth, but it will depend on you taking the antibiotics. Brush your teeth and stow all these goodies in your bag. I'll make some notes of your care, and we'll be done for this evening."
